2016 musical gems

tiger

I am pleased to be living out the last days of 2016. This was a difficult year for many reasons, however we need to be grateful for the musical gems that were birthed during the last 364 days. Here are a couple of my favorite tracks of 2016.

Barcelona & I’m a Stone – River Tiber – INDIGO

I need to give River Tiber a special mention here. Indigo is definitely my TOP RECORD of 2016. The whole thing is brilliant, from start to finish. I was a little surprised to not see many people giving this album props on the various blogs etc…I think he deserves much more recognition for his stellar musicianship, songwriting, and vocals, but like many things, perhaps more appreciation will come with time. A big thanks to RT for inspiring me to no end this year!

Beautiful People – Mark Pritchard feat. Thom Yorke

An absolutely gorgeous work of melancholy art by two master musicians. This ode to loss is musically and visually stunning.

Bullets – Kaytranada feat. Little Dragon

Cudos to Kaytranada for sharing his great debut album this year. Although ‘Leave Me Alone’ was already a favorite from last year, this records’ top track for me, hands down, is Bullets. Ps…The record’s artwork is amazing.

Welcome To The Jungle – Aaradhna

I can’t get this track out of my mind. I absolutely love everything about it.

Consideration – Rihanna feat. SZA

This track makes me mental. SZA is flawless.

Ngoni – Africaine 808

The whole record is great.

4 Degrees – ANOHNI ( produced by Hudson Mohawke and Oneohtrix Point Never )

Yes to consciousness! Earth awareness, dope production, and a transgendered artist getting recognition. F*$K yeah.

Go Slow – Electric Wire Hustle

Here’s another band that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Mara TK always brings some serious musical heat.

Don’t touch my hair – Solange feat. Sampha

The best part of the song is when Sampha comes in, and they jam out on the chorus. Killer video too. BUT why hasn’t Solange credited SAMPHA on youtube…Artists need to remember and credit their collaborators! Shiiiiiiiit

Happy New Years! Let’s make some SICK music in 2017! ONE LOVE

Sarah ❤

2015 Musical Gems

Screen Shot 2015-12-28 at 19.47.432015 was a serious year for music. Music makers were on point, stepped up their game, and expressed innovative breakthrough’s in the art of making musical gems to last through the ages. Talented women producers are FINALLY making a true mark on the global music scene. And music videos are at an all time creative high. Here is my list of my top tracks of 2015 in no particular order .

Empress Of – How Do You Do It

Me – Terrible Records

This girl blew my mind in 2015. She is 23 years old, and just PRODUCED a great fucking, left of centre, pop album. She is also an excellent lyricist.

Branko – Eventually (feat. Alex Rita & Bison)

Atlas – Enchufada

I’ve been following Buraka Som Sistema since the Red Bull Music Academy in 2007 when Mike Stellar from RBMA Portugal handed me the stellar documentary Lusofonia, a (R)Evolução.. which delved into the Luso Portuguese music scene. This documentary had a big impact on me then…And now in 2015, Branko, one of the main producers of BSS dropped his first solo album. Eventually is pure bliss. Obrigada.

Ben Khan – Blade (Tidal Wave Of Love)

Demo on soundcloud!

How is it possible that this song sounds so good? It’s a demo that was released on sound cloud. This track fucking kills it. Excellent production, killer sexy-ass guitar, driving percussion, and Ben’s reverbed voice is like the nectar of the gods. This song makes me feel like I’m a character in the 1982 Blade film. Watch for Ben in 2016.

LA Priest – Oino

Inji – Domino Record Co.

I just love this guy and this star wars style video. Yes yes & yes. Production is simple, yet perfect. Vocals are absolutely edible.

domino record co.

Electric Wire Hustle – Brother Sun feat. Kimbra

Aeons – Bastard Jazz Records & Loop Recordings

This song feels like waking up on a sunny triumphant morning after surviving the dark night of the soul. Words cannot fully express how much I love this piece of musical art.

Kelela – Rewind

produced by Kingdom + Nugget + Kelela. Additional production by Girl Unit + Obey City

Hallucinogen – Warp Records / Cherry Coffee Floating Points – Nespole

You can’t deny that this song just gets your body moving. Beautiful.

Floating Points – Nespole

Elaenia – Pluto, Luka Bop, Inertia, Beatink Foxtrott – Driven

This video and song are just too powerful for words. Thank you Sam Shepherd for being such a visionary artist, the modern day Bo Hansson, & so much more.

Foxtrott – Driven

A taller Us – One Little Indian

MTL’s Foxtrott kills it with her debut record. This video was directed by Montreal’s own ( & meu amigo!!! ) Kevin Calero. So good. Yes Canada!

FOXTROTT – Driven [Official Music Video] from Kevin Calero on Vimeo</a>.

Tei Shi – See Me

Verde Ep – Mermaid Avenue, Double Denim, Caroline

This video is amazing. Great song too.

Lianne La Havas – Unstoppable

Warner Brothers / Blood

Dang girl, this song is so damn good. How can you be so sexy? What a voice, what a video…enough said.

Jazmine Sullivan -Dumb ft. Meek Mill

Reality Show – RCA Records

Just shut up and jam out to this. You know you want to.

Jamie xx – Gosh

In Colour – Young Turks

F*&K yeah Jamie XX. One of my favourite producers kills it one more time in 2015.

Tame Impala – Let it Happen Modular Recordings

Too good for words.

fka twigs – glass & patron

M3LL155X ep – Young Turks

Like many of you, I’ve been mesmerised my this visionary artist for some time now. I love how experimental both the music and the visual are for this track …It’s like some kind of dark musical theatre vogue session done in a contemporary UK style. I don’t like everything she does musically but visually, and artistically, i think she is a modern day art genius.

The Weeknd – Can’t Feel My Face

This is my favourite pop song of the year. Abel channels Michael Jackson perfectly and the bass just makes me mental. Definitely my #1 guilty pleasure of the year. Yes Canada.

Drake – Hotline Bling

This is my #2 guilty pleasure of 2015. And the video is pretty fun. It just makes the people happy. Yes Canada.

Pacific Shore – Stellar

No Distance Between Us – Cosmonostro

This is my favourite track that I released in 2015. Big big love for my Pacific Shore Family and stay tuned for our new EP coming in 2016!

Happy New Year to my musical family! LOVE LOVE LOVE.

My Top Tracks of 2014

2014 was an INCREDIBLE year for new music. Here are my top picks of the last year.

Screen Shot 2015-01-05 at 09.46.20

CARIBOU – CAN’T DO WITHOUT YOU

Caribou is one of my favourite fellow Canadian music makers, and ‘Can’t Do Without You’ is a timeless, future classic, and mind blowing song.

LITTLE DRAGON – KILLING ME

Little Dragon has been one of my all time favourite band’s ever since dropping their debut self title LP in 2007. I eagerly await every one of their new releases, so it’s no surprise that Nabuma Rubberband was easily my most anticipated record of the year. As per usual, LD kills it with a handful of ‘anthemic’ gems, including Klapp Klapp, Uderbart, and Pretty Girls, …but Killing Me still hits me the hardest.

JUNGLE – TIME
2014 was Jungle’s year. They erupted like a mythical volcano which seemingly came out of thin air. This band’s killer sound and rising status as one of the most interesting bands of the year puts me in awe. These guys have genius videos, and a fantastic sound that only brings joy to those who take the time to be seduced by their carefully crafted music.

TĀLĀ – ALCHEMY

T nestled her way deep into my heart this year. For me, she is the most inspiring and exciting fellow female producer/singer to come up this year. It’s very exciting to see a woman getting into some serious production, and start receiving all kind of love for her hard work. Her dark, yet uplifting, UK bass heavy electronic antics are right up my alley. The video is absolutely stunning too!
GLASS ANIMALS – HAZEY
Glass Animals is one of my new favourite bands. This song is like home made chocolate mint truffles melting in your mouth. GA, you are fucking loco, and I love it.
ELECTRIC WIRE HUSTLE – BOTTOM LINE ( FLAKO REMIX )
This song makes me want to sing and dance from the mountain tops. Mara TK’s voice is pure buttery goodness, and Flako’s production is stellar.

JAMIE XX – ALL UNDER ONE ROOF RAVING
To my extreme delight, one of my favourite producers, Jamie XX dropped this nostalgic, dance heavy UK anthem in June. This track makes me lose my shit.
TEI SHI – BASSICALLY
When I first heard Tei Shi’s music I didn’t give it a second listen, BUT then she dropped this gem, which I think is GENIUS. Listen to this LOUD and get ready to exorcise your dancing demons. Looking forward to hearing more music from this rising songstress in the future.

JAZMINE SULLIVAN – DUMB ( FEAT. MEEK MILL )
Dumb is my top R&B/Hip Hop track of the year. On this ‘infidelity avenged’ anthem, Jazmine’s voice shines on top of a seriously neck breaking beat.
IBEYI – OYA
Discovering these two lovely French/Cuban twins was ever so refreshing. Their unique brand of ‘doom soul’ makes me feel like going into the forest to conduct a spiritual ceremony and connect with pacha mama’s true essence.
KAYTRANADA FEAT. SHAY LIA – LEAVE ME ALONE
I closely follow the work of my fellow Montrealer, Kaytranada. I LOVE to see talented and genuine people finding success in this crazy music industry. I’m proud and thrilled to see his well deserved international success over the recent years. Leave Me Alone is one heavy 2014 DANCE anthem.
SZA – JULIA
SZA destroys it with her throw back 80’s style and beautiful voice. Julia makes me want to dance in an empty farm barn while wearing a pink ballet Tutu.
GIDGE – NORRLAND
This track is like hiking through a magical Swedish forest at sun rise with your loved ones.
FATIMA – DO BETTER ( PROD. BY FLAKO )
I’ve been following Fatima’s career since she attended RBMA a year after yours truly. Her voice shimmers beautifully on top of Flako’s gorgeous production.
LIL SILVA FEAT. BANKS – DON’T YOU LOVE
I discovered this amazing UK producer through Banks. Now he’s definitely up on my top list of producers to watch for. This track is SICK! Beautiful isn’t strong enough a word to describe it.

OYINDA – WHAT STILL REMAINS
This track is like watching a butterfly drink the sweetest nectar from an orchid on a sunny morning.

MAHAUT MONDINO – THE GREAT ELEMENTS
This is a left of centre song, but once it gets inside your bones, you can’t get enough. The chorus is so damn empowering it makes me feel like I can do anything. The video is amazingly simple yet completely fascinating and was produced by Mahaut’s father, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, a celebrated photographer and videographer.

BANKS – GODDESS ( PROD. BY LIL SILVA )
LIL SILVA’s production on this track makes me lose my mind. I love this LA woman and her empowering lyrics. Hell yes, nobody should be fucking with a goddess!
FKA TWIGS – 2 WEEKS
My fascination with FKA Twigs originated not from her music but from her visual aesthetic. She is truly an inspiring artist with a beautiful voice, incredible dance moves, and a passionate drive to create art . I kind of skip over most of her songs, but when 2 weeks dropped, so did my jaw. I was blown away by the video and by the creamy goodness of this song. The lyrics are a little too WEEKND for my liking, but the complete package still stands out as genius.
PACIFIC SHORE feat. SARAH LINHARES – STREET CONFUSION
And finally, please allow me to share my favourite release of 2014 that I created with my greatly talented French friends PACIFIC SHORE. I’m proud of this record and am ever so grateful to share it with you. We have another EP on the horizon which will drop in 2015. WATCH FOR IT.
Also check our short film / music video we produced on the mighty Madeira Island.

HAPPY 2015!!! ONE LOVE !!!

A couple of my favorite tracks of 2010

What a year 2010 has been for music. Here is a modest list of some of my favorite songs of the year.

I will confess off the top I have an extremely weak spot for soulful buttery vocals, heavy baselines and synths, dark sensibilities, and banging beats that can transport you to another world or simply make you lose your mind on the dance floor.

So without further ado here are 12 of my top tracks of 2010.

1- War Within – Slakah the Beatchild, Ebrahim, & Tingsek

Slakah, Ebrahim, and Sweden’s Tingsek hooked up this year and released this free track as promo for their Vibe, Love, Smile tour. I’m so glad they did, cause this song officially makes me crazy. All the musical elements are in the right place at the right time to make this track damn near perfection. Killer synths and bass, a banging beat, INCREDIBLE VOCALS, particularly back vocals that can be compared to D’Angelo’s masterpieces, a catchy hook and simple lyrics that we can all feel. The only problem with this track is that it is TOO damn short!

*** Saw these guys rip it up together at The Goods this year. I must confess it wasn’t totally my bag BUT the musicianship and vocals were tight. What really amazed me was Tinsek’s voice. I had never heard of him before and he is amazing live.

SLAKAH THE BEATCHILD, EBRAHIM, TINSEK

2- Night Air – Jamie Woon

I only discovered Jamie’s genius this year thanks to Amelia’s killer blog PUT ME ON IT . Thanks girl! Now, I can honestly say I think he is one of my new favorites. His voice is simply GORGEOUS and his tracks are beautiful. Look out for this boy cause word is he’s dropping an album in 2011. I am anxiously awaiting the day Jamie!

JAMIE WOON

3- Caribou – Odessa

From the very first second that I heard this track I have to say I just lost my shit. This track is EPIC. It brings together all the elements you long to hear in an epic track ; a killer beat, a beautiful voice, catchy lyrics, emotional progressions, and a dark dance-floor sensibility. I played this song on repeat probably 25 times that first day. I’m also so proud Daniel’s Canadian and representing. Actually the whole album is great. My second favorite track is Sun.

CARIBOU

4- Mara TK – Run ( away from the valley of fear )

Mara TK is one massive talent to watch for in 2011. This track is actually a preview to his solo ep coming out next year. You might know him from New Zealand’s super soulful group, Electric Wire Hustle, which has begun to carve out a serious following worldwide. They make amazing future soul music you can groove to. I had the absolute pleasure of hanging with Mara at the Red Bull Music Academy in 2007. He’s a mad talent with an INCREDIBLY soulful voice that can bring tears to your eyes. I nearly did when I saw him performing Motherless Child during a showcase at the academy. Keep on bringing it Mara! Click on the link above to hear the song on his Bandcamp page.

MARA TK

5- Onra – High Hopes featuring Reggie B.

This track makes me crazy! Onra killed it this year by putting out his masterpiece album, Long Distance. I love the entire album but High Hopes is my jam. I also want to give it up massively for Reggie B who is one of my favorite vocalists to collaborate with all the serious cosmic hip hop funk and soul heads worldwide. This man has been bringing it ever since I first heard his stellar vocals on New Worlds , a collaboration with the Big Payback (which is actually Onra & Byron the Aquarius) on Jay Scarlett & Circulations New Worlds compilation in 2008.

ONRA

6- Stumble – Bonjay

I’m so happy to see Bonjay’s Alanna and Pho KICKING ASS this year. They dropped their killer album, Broughtupsy in October and have been touring and making magic all over as of late. Alanna’s voice is like butta and Pho’s production is massive.

Stumble is my jam simply because I want to dance every time I hear it and the twin videos are SICK! Bonjay decided to make two videos for the track, each with a different dancer performing a choreography by Dana Michel. Wow! I teach a couple dance classes a week and I’ve been using Stumble as my warm up track for the last couple months. This track makes me want to go crazy. Addy, the dancer in the video below is simply FIERCE! I gotta say Want a Gang is also a top track for me.

BONJAY

7- Ariel – Stateless ( Dark Sky Remix )

I just discovered Dark Sky’s work literally a month ago. I stumbled upon him on Soundcloud and proceeded to listen to all of his tracks . At first I was drawn into his Kelis remix which was on repeat for two days but THEN I found Ariel. I feel in love. Deeply in love. This remix makes me want to lose my shit and go crazy on the dance floor. Stateless’ original version of Ariel is beautiful BUT I think Dark Sky took it to the next level.

DARK SKY

8- Maverick Sabre – Inside ft Footsie

Gotta give it up to Scott C. for playing this track on the Goods radio show. I went bananas when I first heard it. This track kills me! It’s so hype. Here’s my suggestion for you… Play this song crazy loud , let go and just DANCE and then tell me what you think. Maverick released it on his album, The Travelling Man Mixtape, earlier this year.

MAVERICK SABRE

9- Whoops – STAC

This is simply a beautiful track. I just love it. I wrote an entire entry on her earlier this year called Stac it Up!

STAC

10- Cruise Control – Eric Lau

Eric Lau always brings smokin’ hot beats that have the power to take you away. I love this little gem.

ERIC LAU

11- Detriot – Moonstarr

This year my bro Moonstarr released a couple projects on Public Transit Recordings, however my favorite has to be a re-release of Detriot. It makes me wanna go crazy! Below you will find a little preview video to his recent nostalgic release, The Archive. I have to give a BIG shout out for another one of his tracks which is my second fave this year, Monopoly feat the one and only, ever so LOVELY Tash.

MOONSTARR

12- Caramba – Lou Piensa feat. Rael Da Rima & Gaspar

Giving it up for my bro, Lou Piensa, and his killer track / video with Rael & Gaspar. This track is a preview for Lou’s solo project which could be dropping ??? Lou has yet to inform us all of his plans BUT I’m sure when it’s time it will be QUALITY. The best things in life take time to prepare…Don’t we all know it!

You might know Lou best for his sick MC skills in Montreal’s super group, Nomadic Massive, who have been having an incredible year performing and doing their thing. Big up Brazil’s Rael Da Rima who is a phenomenal performer and talent to watch for. Can’t wait till he comes back to perform here in Montreal or (fingers crossed) when I get to see him in BRAZIL!

LOU PIENSA

HAPPY HOLIDAYS !!!

NEXT POST : TALENT TO WATCH FOR IN 2011
