2015 was a serious year for music. Music makers were on point, stepped up their game, and expressed innovative breakthrough’s in the art of making musical gems to last through the ages. Talented women producers are FINALLY making a true mark on the global music scene. And music videos are at an all time creative high. Here is my list of my top tracks of 2015 in no particular order .
I’ve been following Buraka Som Sistema since the Red Bull Music Academy in 2007 when Mike Stellar from RBMA Portugal handed me the stellar documentary Lusofonia, a (R)Evolução.. which delved into the Luso Portuguese music scene. This documentary had a big impact on me then…And now in 2015, Branko, one of the main producers of BSS dropped his first solo album. Eventually is pure bliss. Obrigada.
How is it possible that this song sounds so good? It’s a demo that was released on sound cloud. This track fucking kills it. Excellent production, killer sexy-ass guitar, driving percussion, and Ben’s reverbed voice is like the nectar of the gods. This song makes me feel like I’m a character in the 1982 Blade film. Watch for Ben in 2016.
Like many of you, I’ve been mesmerised my this visionary artist for some time now. I love how experimental both the music and the visual are for this track …It’s like some kind of dark musical theatre vogue session done in a contemporary UK style. I don’t like everything she does musically but visually, and artistically, i think she is a modern day art genius.
Caribou is one of my favourite fellow Canadian music makers, and ‘Can’t Do Without You’ is a timeless, future classic, and mind blowing song.
LITTLE DRAGON – KILLING ME
Little Dragon has been one of my all time favourite band’s ever since dropping their debut self title LP in 2007. I eagerly await every one of their new releases, so it’s no surprise that Nabuma Rubberband was easily my most anticipated record of the year. As per usual, LD kills it with a handful of ‘anthemic’ gems, including Klapp Klapp, Uderbart, and Pretty Girls, …but Killing Me still hits me the hardest.
JUNGLE – TIME
2014 was Jungle’s year. They erupted like a mythical volcano which seemingly came out of thin air. This band’s killer sound and rising status as one of the most interesting bands of the year puts me in awe. These guys have genius videos, and a fantastic sound that only brings joy to those who take the time to be seduced by their carefully crafted music.
TĀLĀ – ALCHEMY
T nestled her way deep into my heart this year. For me, she is the most inspiring and exciting fellow female producer/singer to come up this year. It’s very exciting to see a woman getting into some serious production, and start receiving all kind of love for her hard work. Her dark, yet uplifting, UK bass heavy electronic antics are right up my alley. The video is absolutely stunning too!
GLASS ANIMALS – HAZEY
Glass Animalsis one of my new favourite bands. This song is like home made chocolate mint truffles melting in your mouth. GA, you are fucking loco, and I love it.
ELECTRIC WIRE HUSTLE – BOTTOM LINE ( FLAKO REMIX )
This song makes me want to sing and dance from the mountain tops. Mara TK’s voice is pure buttery goodness, and Flako’s production is stellar.
JAMIE XX – ALL UNDER ONE ROOF RAVING
To my extreme delight, one of my favourite producers, Jamie XX dropped this nostalgic, dance heavy UK anthem in June. This track makes me lose my shit.
TEI SHI – BASSICALLY
When I first heard Tei Shi’s music I didn’t give it a second listen, BUT then she dropped this gem, which I think is GENIUS. Listen to this LOUD and get ready to exorcise your dancing demons. Looking forward to hearing more music from this rising songstress in the future.
JAZMINE SULLIVAN – DUMB ( FEAT. MEEK MILL )
Dumb is my top R&B/Hip Hop track of the year. On this ‘infidelity avenged’ anthem, Jazmine’s voice shines on top of a seriously neck breaking beat.
IBEYI – OYA
Discovering these two lovely French/Cuban twins was ever so refreshing. Their unique brand of ‘doom soul’ makes me feel like going into the forest to conduct a spiritual ceremony and connect with pacha mama’s true essence.
KAYTRANADA FEAT. SHAY LIA – LEAVE ME ALONE
I closely follow the work of my fellow Montrealer, Kaytranada. I LOVE to see talented and genuine people finding success in this crazy music industry. I’m proud and thrilled to see his well deserved international success over the recent years. Leave Me Alone is one heavy 2014 DANCE anthem.
SZA – JULIA
SZA destroys it with her throw back 80’s style and beautiful voice. Julia makes me want to dance in an empty farm barn while wearing a pink ballet Tutu.
GIDGE – NORRLAND
This track is like hiking through a magical Swedish forest at sun rise with your loved ones.
FATIMA – DO BETTER ( PROD. BY FLAKO )
I’ve been following Fatima’s career since she attended RBMA a year after yours truly. Her voice shimmers beautifully on top of Flako’s gorgeous production.
LIL SILVA FEAT. BANKS – DON’T YOU LOVE
I discovered this amazing UK producer through Banks. Now he’s definitely up on my top list of producers to watch for. This track is SICK! Beautiful isn’t strong enough a word to describe it.
OYINDA – WHAT STILL REMAINS
This track is like watching a butterfly drink the sweetest nectar from an orchid on a sunny morning.
MAHAUT MONDINO – THE GREAT ELEMENTS
This is a left of centre song, but once it gets inside your bones, you can’t get enough. The chorus is so damn empowering it makes me feel like I can do anything. The video is amazingly simple yet completely fascinating and was produced by Mahaut’s father, Jean-Baptiste Mondino, a celebrated photographer and videographer.
BANKS – GODDESS ( PROD. BY LIL SILVA )
LIL SILVA’s production on this track makes me lose my mind. I love this LA woman and her empowering lyrics. Hell yes, nobody should be fucking with a goddess!
FKA TWIGS – 2 WEEKS
My fascination with FKA Twigs originated not from her music but from her visual aesthetic. She is truly an inspiring artist with a beautiful voice, incredible dance moves, and a passionate drive to create art . I kind of skip over most of her songs, but when 2 weeks dropped, so did my jaw. I was blown away by the video and by the creamy goodness of this song. The lyrics are a little too WEEKND for my liking, but the complete package still stands out as genius.
PACIFIC SHORE feat. SARAH LINHARES – STREET CONFUSION
And finally, please allow me to share my favourite release of 2014 that I created with my greatly talented French friends PACIFIC SHORE. I’m proud of this record and am ever so grateful to share it with you. We have another EP on the horizon which will drop in 2015. WATCH FOR IT.
