My 2012 Musical Highlights

Picture 4

2012 was a BIG year, full of magical moments and very difficult ones. As each year comes to an end, I always like to reflect and look back upon what has happened over the last 12 months in order to appreciate the triumphs, learn from the challenges, and prepare to embark upon a brand new journey into the unknown. It allows for closure and makes room for new beginnings, new adventures, and new goals to strive towards.

I want to share some of my most meaningful musical moments and favorite tracks / videos of 2012 so as to appreciate them, celebrate the year that was, and prepare to embark into this great future.

1 – So many amazing 2012 RELEASES!

DJ RIDE – LIFE IN LOOPS – ‘Here Before’ –  OPTIMUS DISCOS – PORTUGAL

This was one of my favorite collabs of the year with Portugual’s World Scratch Champion. We’ve reached nearly 170, 000 youtube views and counting…TUGA POWA!

STANLEY BLOOM & MIKE RO WAVE – PACIFIC SHORE – ‘ ROAD 1’  & ‘BACK TO CATOWN’ – FRANCE

I LOVE the Pacific Shore Project and really enjoyed working with these talented Parisians. I’m looking forward to performing with them in Paris this Spring.

NOVOS TALENTOS FNAC 2012 – CULTURA FNAC – ‘RIGHT HERE’ with CAMPLAIX –  PORTUGAL

This is one of my favorite releases this year with my Portuguese Soul brother Filipe Campos ( CAMPLAIX ) who happens to be one of my favorite producers to work with. I was so honored to be selected for this annual compilation which features upcoming Portuguese Talent.  TUGA POWA!

JAI NITAI LOTUS – SOMETHING YOU FEEL – ’80’s Heart’, ‘Heat Stew’ & ‘Bailout’ – CANADA

Nitai’s record is very close to my heart. I might be a tad biased but I can truly say that Nitai is one of the freshest and most interesting Hip Hop producers and MC’s in Montreal ( and we’ve got tons of big talents in town! ) .  It was such a pleasure to work with him on this album.

JAI NITAI LOTUS – MINGUS CLAP

I got to be a part of this music video shoot with some great Montrealers. It was a very fun day and the video is a work of art!

PIU PIU BEAT TAPE 1 – ‘So Much More’ – FUTURE FALCON & The Velcro Kings –  Québec, Canada

This is a demo version of Future Falcon’s first release and was also featured in the closing credits of PIU PIU, the MTL  Independent Documentary Film.

Les Ducs Du Hasard – Les Ducs Du Hasard EP – ‘Le thème’ – Québec, Canada

It was an honor to collaborate with these Montreal Hip Hop talents. They had a very clear vision of what they wanted me to do with this track, they wanted a soulful cover version of the dukes of Hazard theme song to go along with their rhymes.

2 – All Things FUTURE FALCON

Future Falcon is my brand new musical project with LAZERFALCON ( Shawn Laptiste ).  Like a phoenix erupting from the ashes, we soar onto the Montreal beat scene with our own blend of Soulful Electro Future-Pop Post-Dubstep Disco.

We’re off to a great start after recieving a FACTOR grant to produce our debut EP, performing @ The GOODS 10th Anniversary Blowout and at POP MTL. Our EP will be dropping Summer 2013.

Here’s a lovely article that Marie Mello and BANG BANG BLOG where you can listen to Stand Down, one of the songs from the EP.

 3 – TRAVELS

In 2012 I was blessed with the opportunity to travel through the Philippines and also visit Lisboa, Portugal to visit family and perform with my Portuguese band , Os Swagg Boyz. Both trips were major highlights of my year. Here’s us performing in Lisboa in April.

4 – Writing

Another highlight of 2012 was writing my first ever published article about Zaki Ibrahim’s latest album for one of my favorite music blogs MusicIsMySanctuary.com

And FINALLY, Last but not Least >>> My Favorite Tracks & Videos of 2012

1 – MAJOR LAZER feat. AMBER – GET FREE

This has got to be my summer 2012 jam. This song killed me when I first heard it.

2  – ZAKI IBRAHIM (Produced by DJ Catalist ) – SOMETHING IN THE WATER

LOVE

 3 – JESSIE WARE – RUNNING

Jessie Ware killed it this year with her latest release. She is on fire. This is my jam.

4 – FRANK OCEAN – Thinking Bout You

What can I say about this song…it’s simply GORGEOUS.

5 – JAI PAUL – JASMINE

Jai Paul is back with another ONE song this year. This guy’s output is seriously slow but damn can this man make a killer song. I can’t even understand what the hell he’s saying half the time but I still love it.

6 – DISCLOSURE feat. SAM SMITH – LATCH

This song makes me want to vogue like it’s 1999.

7 – SWEET TOOTH – KRYSTALE & KATRADAMUS ( now known as KATRANADA )

This is probably my favorite song to come out of Montreal all year. BIG UPs K & K as you represent Montreal super powa!

8 – Jesse Boykins III & Gora Sou – The Perfect Blues

This song is so damn simple but I can’t help but love it. Dr. Woo’s video is gorgeous.

9 – RYHE – Open

Beautiful

10 – SANTIGOLD – BIG MOUTH

This song makes me so happy.

11 – M. I. A. – BAD GIRLS   Katy B x Geeneus x Jessie Ware – Aaliyah

I’m not entirely into this song BUT This is officially my favorite music video of 2012.

12 – Katy B x Geeneus x Jessie Ware – Aaliyah

Big thanks to my girl the one Tash who sent this one my way. I fell in love in an instant…Brilliant!

13 – AGUA NEGRA feat. BOOGAT – YO LA VI

Me gusta Agua Negra! These guys are really talented and I love working with them. This is a great track which also features Montreal’s Boogat. I got to play a ‘chola’ character in this music  video too…jiji

HAPPY NEW YEARS!

MAY 2013 be a wild adventure!

A D O R N

Bonjay is back…

This Thursday evening Toronto’s own super couple, Bonjay, is back to play in Montreal. This time, the Dancehall duo celebrates as POP Montreal presents the launch of their Gimme Gimme Ep at Divan Orange. The show is gonna be hot people!  Alanna does come correct on the mic with her sweet yet rough & tough vocal stylings and Pho is the man bringing the heat with his banging beats.  Their live show is dynamic and both players create a high-energy synergy of bad ass bass, beats, and soulfulness. They describe their sound as a combination of Dancehall innovation, indie sentiments, and R&B hooks…so true.

Congratulations Alanna & Pho!

See you on the dancefloor!
